Offshore Drilling–How the Democrats Will Lose the Election

The Democratic Party is about to shoot itself in the foot and does not even know it. When it comes to offshore drilling, they are simply on the wrong side of the issue, the wrong side of public sentiment, and the wrong side of history. If they have their way, the price at the pump will continue to climb, our economy will tank and–after President [God help us all] Obama has been in office a year or two and the price at the pump is $6.00 a gallon–even the Democrats will have to concede that we need to pursue all sources of energy–even the oil under our feet which they desperately want us not to tap. The irrational opposition to tapping our own resources is driven in some measure by the all pervasive Left wing hatred of everything Bush, the uncompromising environmental movement which would have us living in caves and foraging for roots and berries before we tap the bountiful resources off our own shores, and the enemies of this country who just plain want us to fail.
The truth is that we should explore all sources of energy until the time comes that we wean our way off of oil. We cannot afford to go cold turkey–as much as we might like to–until the time comes when we can rely upon renewable sources of energy. Until that day comes we can either: 1. rely on our enemies to supply us with oil and subject ourselves to the whims of countries who may or may not like us, and may or may not continue to supply us; or 2. start relying upon ourselves–as Americans have mostly done for over two centuries now–tap our own resources and shift in time to other means of fueling the economy. That may come some day, but that day has not arrived.
Is offshore drilling a bad thing? Consider this:
1. Oil rigs can be friendly to the environment and especially wildlife. Under the “Rigs to Reefs” program, this country has sunk old oil rigs into the ocean for years, providing 2-3 acres of habitat for marine life which does not otherwise exist in the Gulf of Mexico, where there is little structure. Oil rigs both active and retired, provide great cover for marine life and the fishing is better in and around the rigs. This argument will gall the environmentalists to no end, but cannot be refuted. You will never hear this side of the issue from the Democrats or the intractable environmentalists supporting them.
2. Oil rigs contribute very little oil pollution–far behind other factors such as, but not limited to: a. Pollution caused by run off from land [i.e., people draining oil down storm sewers, run off from streets, other]; b. pollution from leaking tankers; and c. natural seepage from under the ocean itself. A report by the National Academies of Science cited in such “conservative” publications as the New York Times found that pollution from oil rigs accounts for only three percent (3%) of all pollution–far less than other sources. This is a crucial fact that the greenies do not want the public to know and which you will never hear on the news. If you were to listen to the Democrats, you would think that every oil rig leaks oil and that tapping our own resources offshore will unleash millions of tons of oil into otherwise pristine oceans when in fact that is simply untrue. How many oil rigs polluted the Gulf after the meanest storm in history–Katrina? None.
3. If we do not drill offshore, our enemies will. As you may know, that chubby little Fascist Hugo Chavez, Castro, Russia, and China are not our friends. In fact they would love nothing more than to displace us as the world’s remaining superpower since the collapse of the Soviet Union. They each sit on vast amounts of oil or are cultivating friends and surrogates who do. They have no qualms about tapping their own resources and they must be amazed that we choose to rely on others to supply the oil that greases our economy and supports our way of life. In fact, they will have no qualms about exploring energy sources anywhere they can. Indeed, there is nothing to prevent them from drilling off American shores if they chose to do so. Are Americans really prepared allow our enemies to drill off of our own shores, while we sit around with one hand tied behind our back because Ted Kennedy and company do not want us to tap our own resources? This idea will capture the attention of the American public more than any aspect of this issue. It is more than a theoretical problem and could easily happen given the constraints we are operating under presently. The concept of sending American dollars overseas to pay enemies for our oil (Saudi Arabia being one of our worst enemies and financier of world wide jihad) will hit even closer to home when the public realizes that Chavez, Castro, the Russians and the Chinese [who finance both Chavez and Castro] could easily tap oil reserves off American shores when our own country cannot. That possibility is and should be unacceptable to the American public.
4. If we tap our own resources then, in time, the price at the pump will decrease. There is little chance that drilling off our own shores will produce oil in the short term. It clearly will not. It will take time–assuming we resolve to tap our own resources in the first place–to reap the benefits of exploiting our own resources. However, by doing so, we ensure that we will have future oil supplies (which is anything but certain presently) and we can continue forward with the development of alternative energy sources which everyone–Democrats and Republicans alike–agree on. (Witness Congressman Steve King from Iowa, the resident expert in Washington on alternative sources of energy, and an unapologetic conservative Republican, who is the leader in Congress for the fight to promote and develop all sources of energy in order to preserve our economy and our way of life.) By moving forward with offshore drilling, the mere fact that we are doing so will have an effect on the oil speculators who have driven the cost of oil to record highs and led to the current pain at the pump. After all, they are betting against us; they are predicting the future. They are betting that we will continue to be reliant upon other sources of oil than our own, and they are betting that we will never tap our boundless reserves which lie right under our own shores. If we called their bluff then the future changes and so does the price of oil.
If we look at this issue in a dispassionate way, then it makes sense to tap our own resources and wean ourselves away from reliance upon foreign countries who are hostile and cannot be counted on to act in our best interests. At the same time, we must continue to pursue every alternative source of energy available to us, just as Congressman Steve King and others are fighting for in Washington. The answer is not one thing or the other–oil or alternative energy sources. The answer is both. And, the American public wants us to drill. They are not myopic about this issue–as are the Democrats and the rabid environmentalists who value animals and tundra over your family and the welfare of this country. The American people understand full well that we need to do both things–tap our own oil supplies and pursue every available alternative source of energy. If we do not, we are doomed as an economy and as a country. That the Democrats do not understand this, endangers our Republic and puts them squarely on the wrong side of this issue.
